Summer Faculty Workshops 2006

Participant Information

Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon
August 6-9, 2006

Conducted by:
David McIntyre and Corinne Manogue

Welcome to the homepage for the Paradigms in Physics Workshops for 2006.  We will be using this webpage to post information which we hope will be useful to you as you plan for the workshop.  Please check for updates from time to time.

Schedule

The workshop will begin at 5 pm on Sunday August 6 with a one hour introduction to the program in Weniger 304. (Please enter through the south west door). This will be followed by an introductory dinner. The workshop will continue all of Monday, Tuesday morning (afternoon and evening are free to explore beautiful Oregon) and all of Wednesday. Thursday is envisioned as a travel day.

PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE--available ~2 weeks before the workshop

Travel

Please remember that the cost of your travel to and from Corvallis is the responsibility of your home institution or yourself.  Our NSF grant does NOT include travel funding.

Corvallis is not served by commercial air service, but is 100 miles south of Portland and 40 miles north of Eugene, both of which have airports. Portland has many more flights than Eugene, so is used more often by Corvallis travelers. The one tip we would suggest is to avoid adding a Portland to Eugene leg in an attempt to get closer to OSU - it doesn't save much time and the propeller planes commonly used are not the most pleasant. Driving directions are available on the hotel website. A shuttle bus is available for travel from Portland airport to Corvallis--information is available at:

       http://www.hutshuttle.com

The shuttle officially stops at the Hilton Garden Inn (your hotel) and at the OSU Bookstore.

Driving directions, maps, etc. are available online at:

Housing

We have booked a room for you at the Hilton Garden Inn for the nights of 8/6-8/9, inclusive, The hotel is a few block walk from the OSU Physics Department in Weniger Hall, where the workshop activities will be held. The cost of housing in Corvallis is provided by the NSF grant; we will pay the charges for these nights directly. You will be responsible for the charges for any extra nights and for any incidental fees.  Information about the Hilton Garden Inn is available at

See the link under travel for a campus map.

Meals

The NSF grant will cover the cost of your meals from Sunday dinner through Thursday breakfast. We will eat dinner together on Sunday. To be reimbursed for the other meals on your own, you will need to fill out a Vendor Form (highlighted areas only) in your information packet when you arrive. We can only reimburse meals up to $11.25 for breakfast, $11.25 for lunch, and $22.50 for dinner and cannot reimburse a tip over 15%.

Workshop Materials

A preliminary packet of materials covering the Spins Paradigm will be sent to you in early July.  The rest of the materials will be handed out upon your arrival in Corvallis. This will include hard copies and CD-ROM versions of materials. If you are interested in previewing some of the materials, see the web sites for the two courses and for the Paradigms project:

     Spin & QM: http://www.physics.oregonstate.edu/~mcintyre/ph425
     Central Forces: http://www.physics.orst.edu/ph426

Computers

Several of the workshop activities will be done in computer labs with guest accounts. Alternatively, you may bring and use your own laptop computer for the workshop. The workshop will use Maple and Java. Java is free and we can help you install it on PC laptops (Mac laptops will have Java already installed under OSX. OS 9 will not run the Java we need.)

Keys

If you are coming from outside OSU, we will provide you with a key to Weniger Hall and to the workshop classroom (Weniger 304) and an After-Hours Work Permit at the first session. Please return these to the organizers before you leave. You should carry the After-Hours Work Permit with you in case you are approached by security.

Parking

Parking at the Hilton Garden Inn is free.

The hotel is easy walking distance from campus. On campus, you can park in any faculty/staff lot after 5 pm on weekdays or anytime on the weekend. Parking permits will be available at the first session for 8 am -5 pm weekday parking, if you need them. A parking map is available at:

     OSU Parking Map

We will arrange carpooling from the hotel to the introductory Sunday dinner at the first session.
