Kerry Browne: This activity provides an excellent opportunity to review the postulates of quantum mechanics and how quantum calculations are made in the wavefunction representation. The first few times students do these calculations with wavefunctions, it is easy for them to use algorithmic/rote methods. It may be very useful to encourage students to refer back to the Postulates of Quantum Mechanics that they learned in the spin 1/2 case and use the tools they have to translate those postulates into wavefunction language both so that they can solve the problems presented here and so that they can strengthen the conceptual connections between what they know about QM in the context of discrete (spin 1/2) systems and what they know about QM in the wavefunction context.
