Homework Summer 2011
Chapter 11
For a new temperature scale, water boils at 20.0 oX and freezes at -140 oX. Determine an equation to convert temperatures in oX to temperatures in oC.
Chapter 12
A 3-step cycle is undergone by 2.50 mol of an ideal monatomic gas: (1) the temperature of the gas is increased from 300 K to 600 K at constant volume; (2) the gas is then adiabatically expanded to its original pressure; (3) the gas is then contracted at constant pressure back to its original volume. What is the efficiency of this cycle?
Chapter 13
A cylindrical tin can has a volume of 1800 cm3 and a mass of 120 g. How many grams of lead shot of density 11.4 g/cm3 could it carry without sinking in fresh water?
Chapter 14
A 4.50-kg block hangs vertically from a spring. The block-spring system is in static equilibrium. A 800-g wad of putty is stuck to the block and when the block-spring-putty system reaches static equilibrium, the spring has stretched 5.00 cm further than it had before the putty was added. What is the spring constant of the spring?
Chapter 15
A source of sound waves moves along one straight line between listeners Antonio and Zander. The wavelength of the sound waves heard by Antonio is equal to three-quarters the wavelength heard by Zander. What is the ratio of the speed of the source to the speed of sound? Assume that the air carrying the sound waves is stationary with respect to both listeners.
Chapter 16
As viewed from
above, a square room has speakers in the lower left and upper right corners.
Designate the location of the lower left corner as the origin (x, y)
= (0, 0) and the location of the upper right corner as (x, y) = (5.00 m, 5.00 m).
The sound waves emitted by both speakers are initially in-phase and have a wavelength
of 3.00 m. Where along the wall on the x-axis
does destructive interference occur? Give your answer or answers in terms of
the x-coordinate or x-coordinates.
